In this week’s health report, WHCU’s Pete Blanchard got a tour of the new Center for Wound Healing at Cayuga Medical Center.

At the heart of the hospital’s new center for wound care are two hyperbaric oxygen chambers.

Matthew Rouff, director of the Center for Wound Healing at Cayuga Medical Center.

“Each chamber has its own television, DVD player and cable,” Rouff said. “Patients who are in here come for upwards of 60 or more treatments, and a treatment lasts about two hours, so it’s a major commitment for these patients.”

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the medical use of oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure. It has been shown to be highly effective in treating conditions like carbon monoxide poisoning, skin grafts and thermal burns.

Rouff said the hospital recognized the demand for wound care in the Ithaca area after they saw patients travelling long distances to get the care they needed.

“Before this service was available, people would have to travel to Syracuse or Rochester for the type of wound service we now provide,” Rouff said.

Rouff said the goal is to allow people to continue their day-to-day lives without having to travel long distances.
