Apple for the Teacher Award 2013 – 1:0 for Coach Finnerty!

The 7th, 8th, and 9th grade players & parents of the Dryden Middle School Modified Boys Soccer Team would like to nominate Coach Billy Finnerty for the Apple for the Teacher Award.

If you’ve watched their team practices or cheered at games, then you realize that Coach Finnerty is one of those special coaches who know how to teach, support, motivate and above all inspire their players.

His enthusiasm for the sport of soccer is obvious and contagious. During practices he provides encouraging words and a pat on the back to boost students’ confidence and in return his players are giving their best. Thanks to Coach Finnerty the team also shows great sportsmanship on and off the soccer field among themselves and in interacting with the other teams.

To show you just how much we appreciate Coach Finnerty, here are some quotes from players & parents:

“He is such a fantastic teacher/coach/role model!!!”

“Coach Finnerty is awesome! He does lots of cool things with us and he is really respectful and just fun”.

“Coach Finnerty has shown outstanding patience, guidance and leadership. He is always encouraging the players during games and recognizes good plays with a “call out” or “high 5″ to his players.”

“I like Coach Finnerty because in the games, he doesn’t care about the score and he’s always optimistic. He doesn’t judge the team on how we scored, but instead looks at how we play.”

“For me the difference in the kids from the beginning of the season to the end is remarkable. The team started off tentative and maybe a little awkward and Coach Finnerty has helped them become a confident and cohesive team that respects each other on the field. These are qualities that are learned by having an amazing role model to follow.”

“Coach Finnerty is really nice, patient and cool. Coach doesn’t care about winning as much as building our skills and having fun.”

“I would like to praise Coach Finnerty for his ability to handle students with disabilities and treat them with respect, give them opportunities, and allow them to enjoy the game. He managed his team in a way that all players were encouraging each other, worked as a team, and never put any one down. This is a great achievement for any teacher and especially those working in competitive sports.”

“Coach Finnerty is a really good instructor. He makes it fun!”

“Coach Finnerty’s excitement, enthusiasm, and passion for coaching and teaching soccer is what makes him a truly sensational coach. He encourages all of the players to do their best and gives them the tools and motivation to succeed. He is well-respected by both the players and the parents, and is a tremendous example of what being an inspiring coach is all about.”

“I always look forward to soccer- even to soccer practice on Saturday morning!”

“Our son has always come home from a game glowing from the nice way the Coach has treated him individually and as a team member. It is not an easy job to coach/teach 31 young players and find a way to make every player feel “special”.”

“On our team everyone gets to play. If you are on the team you get to play!’

“Coach Finnerty is everything you could hope for in a coach–instructive while being supportive, and dedicated to the development of his players in a way that takes into account their whole lives as students and athletes. It’s been a joy to see his modified team grow under his guidance. ”

“I’m going to miss soccer and Coach Finnerty. I’m going to sign up for next year’s team for sure!

“As I sit among the parents. I hear only positive comments about Coach Finnerty and his ways with the players – and about his ways with the parents!”

“Billy Finnerty is an incredible asset to the sports program and the school as a whole!” (Bryan Ford, Athletic Director, Dryden Central Schools)

To sum it up: Coach Finnerty is an amazing soccer teacher who helped all his players learn & grow and made sure that everyone was having fun!
